Character Description
Zac is a typical teenage boy who grew up on the Gold Coast, black hair, brown eyes, tall, mostly wearing shorts and an Asian look. He thought he had a perfect life, good grades, parents who allowed him to do whatever he wanted, they gave him his own home in their garage and he got a gorgeous girlfriend called Evie.
Early Life
Zac was born as a merman to Nerissa and he has a sister called Mimmi. Zac’s whole life changed when he went camping on Mako Island together with Cam, his best friend. Zac accidentally fell into the Moon Pool during a full moon, while there were 3 mermaids in the pool who were celabrating the full moon. Zac’s physical contact with the pool during the full moon, broke the spell that prevented him from getting a tail every time he would touch water. Eventually, Zac finds out that he’s adopted by the people of which he thought that they were his biological parents, that he has a sister and who his real mother is. This was a pretty big shock for him.
Throughout Mako Mermaids
Zac’s perfect life changes completely when Zac goes camping on Mako with Cam during a full moon. Zac takes off in the forest to «take a leak». Suddenly an entrance to a cave appears and he enters the cave to explore it. He ends up staring at a weird wall with a trident symbol in the middle. Out of curiosity, he reaches out his hand to the symbol, which causes the symbol to glow. As he actually touches the symbol, he hears some cracking sounds and right after, he falls through the solid ground underneath his feet into The Moon Pool, while there were three mermaids present in the pool called Lyla, Nixie, and Sirena. They were celebrating the full moon when Zac felt in. They are shocked and dump him onto the beach.
The next morning, Zac awakens on the beach of Mako, with only the memory that he discovered a cave entrance. Zac returns to Cam and tries to explain to Cam what he saw, to Cam’s disbelief. Zac takes Cam to where the cave was supposed to be, but the cave is gone when they arrive. Zac doesn´t understand how that is possible and he wants to leave the island as soon as possible. He´s not feeling comfortable anymore.
Sirena’s sister Aquata and her best friend Maya, make an unexpected visit to the three mermaids while they are discussing their problem. Aquata and Maya discover what happened and suspect that Zac now has powers and a tail too. They tell the pod’s council what happened and they are furious. The council decides to flee Mako and to banish the three mermaids.
Unaware of the council’s decision, the mermaids follow Zac to his home to check out if he has gotten any powers. When they arrive, they discover that Zac has gotten powers as he bends the water from a crane. Zac is shocked when this happens and he runs off to the café where he meets up with Cam and Evie. The girls also follow Zac, and they see how Zac wants to show to Cam what he can do. The girls stop Zac with their powers as Zac tries to bend the water out of a garden hose. Zac is embarassed in the front of Cam and Cam doesn´t believe Zac. Zac tries again as Cam walks away. This time, the water spurts out, causing Zac to fall into the water, revealing his tail to himself and the girls for the first time. Zac is shocked to see that he has a tail, as well as the mermaids. In panic, he swims back to the jetty at his home. The mermaids follow him again. At arrival, Zac climbs onto the jetty to dry off his tail, and when he’s dry, he transforms back to his human form, standing up and walking away like nothing ever happened to him, to the shock of himself and the mermaids.
Cam arrives at Zac´s house while the mermaids are on their way back to the moon pool at Mako. Zac is in the water when Cam arrives. As Cam calls out for Zac, he is told by Zac where Zac is, and Cam discovers that Zac has a tail when he walks over to the water, seeing Zac in the water with a tail. Zac also shows Cam that he can indeed move water, proving to Cam that something indeed happened to him at Mako.
As the mermaids enter the moon pool, they are awaited by Aquata, who has bad news. She tells the girls what the council has decided. The girls try to convince Aquata to talk with the council again, but in vain. Aquata says goodbye to Sirena and she gives her moonring to Sirena. She then leaves the moon pool and her sister Sirena, a heartbreaking moment.
The mermaids befriend Zac after they see Zac’s transformation from up close after Evie’s pool party for Zac to cheer him up. Zac and Cam end up in a fight. Out of anger, Cam pushes Zac into the water. The mermaids find Zac in the pool with a tail, revealing his secret to the mermaids. Cam is jealous at Zac´s tail and tries to influence Zac. The girls also try to influence Zac and they succeed. Eventually, the girls reveal to Zac that they are mermaids, while they try to stop Zac from getting the trident, a powerfull merman weapon, created ages ago to destroy the moon pool and all mermaids. As a result of this, Zac feels betrayed and breaks the band with the girls. In his opinion, the girls have lied to him all this time. He also tells Cam about the girls. Cam is surprised with the unexpected discovery as well.
Cam uses this moment to influence Zac to get the trident and to bully the mermaids. Zac becomes the mermaid’s enemy and he manages to get the trident. He also discovers Rita’s cave. Eventually a fight between the mermaids and the landboys emerges near Zac’s house. The mermaids win and Lyla takes off with the trident to hide it. She doesn´t come far and must let go of the trident because it´s draining away her life energy and power. She hides it halfway the route to Mako into a cave, hoping that it will never ever been found again by Zac. She guards the area around the cave every day, while Zac is desperately seaching for it.
Zac still finds the trident with the help of Cam. As Zac grabs the trident, Lyla arrives to defend it and she tries to take it from him. As they both fight over the trident and pull at it, a flash appears and it hits Lyla, causing her to become unconscious and injured. Zac is shocked by what happened and he immediately drops the trident to get to Lyla. He grabs her, finding out that she needs help. Zac brings Lyla to Rita’s cave as fast as he can, calling out for help, while Cam takes the trident to Zac´s house without caring about Lyla.
The mermaids are shocked to find out what happened and they blame Zac. They try to use their moonrings to heal Lyla, but in vain. The moonrings aren’t charged, so they cannot heal Lyla, unless there´s another source of moonlight to charge them, according to Rita. Rita finds out that the trident can help because it stores moonlight. Zac goes to his house to get the trident, where Cam is waiting for him. Cam does not agree with the fact that Zac wants to use the trident to help the «fishchicks». Zac is furious at Cam and he takes the trident by force. Zac charges the moonrings and Lyla is healed right on time. Shocked by what happened to Lyla, the mermaids tell Zac that the trident can do even more. This makes Zac decide to put back the trident where it came from. Lyla is happy with this decision and the friendship between all of them is restored, although Nixie still doesn´t trust Zac.
All Nixie wants is for Zac to lose his powers so that the pod can return. Cam discovers this and he convinces Nixie to get the trident with a lie, letting her believe that the trident can get rid of Zac´s powers. But Cam has other plans with the trident, which he doesn´t tell Nixie. Cam asks Evie for diving gear so he can get the trident. Evie doesn´t trust Cam and wants to go with him because he and Zac have been acting weird to her lately. Cam doesn´t want this but he has no choice. He cannot get the trident without diving gear, and he won´t get these from Evie unless she can go with him. Evie has many questions when she and Cam arrive at the trident cave. Nixie isn´t happy with the arrival of Evie either. Nixie opens up the cave with a stolen moonring and Evie and Cam enter it. Cam opens the door to the bottomless ocean where the trident is stored, and he and Evie swim to the trident. Evie cannot believe what she´s seeing.
Unfortunate, Nixie´s moonring is getting empty and she calls out for Cam to return. Cam swims back, but Evie stays behind and gets trapped in the endless ocean. She´s running out of air fast. This news reaches Zac and he rushes to Mako to save Evie, revealing to her that he is a merman. Evie is shocked and very sad that she´s the last one to know about Zac. This makes her feel like she´s not part of the group. She´s also doubting about Zac´s request to keep it quiet. Zac promises her to get rid of it, but only if she will keep quiet for a few more days. Evie agrees, but Cam has the trident. This worries the mermaids and Zac. At a full moon, Cam goes to Mako with the trident to destroy the moon pool.
In the meantime, Zac knows what´s going on at Mako, but he´s stopped by Evie, who believes that Zac want´s to go to Mako to keep his tail forever, instead of getting rid of it. He convinces Evie that Cam told her a lie and she eventually believes Zac. Zac rushes to Mako and tries to stop Cam before he enters the trident cave, but Cam knocks him out with a zap from the trident. He follows the path like Zac did when he entered the trident cave for the first time. The solid ground also disappears underneath Cam´s feet as he touches the trident wall like Zac did in the beginning, and he almost hits the moon pool with the trident, but he´s temporarily stopped by the mermaids, who are creating a shield with their moonrings to protect the moon pool, but it won´t hold for long. Lyla and Sirena’s moonrings are empty and Nixie´s moonring isn´t holding for long. Luckily Zac woke up right on time after Cam knocked him out and Zac enters the moon pool right on time, using his powers to destroy the trident. The moon pool is saved and Cam’s plan has failed.
Despite being in the moon pool during a full moon, Zac didn´t lose his powers. Luckily, the mermaids do not see him as a threat anymore and Evie likes him for who he is and not for what he is. The mermaids have also proven to Rita that they are worthy of their moonrings, and they may keep the moonrings that they had borrowed from Rita to save the moon pool. Zac also breaks his friendship with Cam.
In season 2, things seem to be going perfectly for Zac. He did lose a friend but he´s still happy with the way it goes now. He´s also completely happy with being a merman since he no longer has to lie to his girlfriend Evie. However, things in his life become complicated again. The seventh full moon since Zac became a merman is about to come and this refuses the council to return to Mako. Sirena tries to convince the council that Zac is not a threat anymore, but the council thinks differently about that and they still see him as a threat. They want the merman to be gone as soon as possible. Two new mermaids called Ondina and Mimmi hear Sirena talk to the council and they think that they can get rid of Zac´s powers. They talk to Sirena and she explains that she and her friends already tried everything. But the newbies still decide to come with her to solve the problem.
It´s their purpose to finish what Sirena once began, but Sirena believes that there’s no way to turn Zac back into a landboy because she already tried. As the newbies arrive at Mako, Sirena introduces them to Rita´s cave. The only thing they need in order to enter the cave and to meet up with Zac, is legs. The newbies find that a disgusting idea, but they are prepared to do whatever it takes, even if that means getting legs. The newbies also meet Poseidon, Rita´s cat. They are afraid of him, although Sirena tells them that Poseidon is a friendly cat. The newbies want to meet the landboy as soon as possible, but Sirena warns them to not do anything stupid and she asks them to follow her lead. They agree and they leave Rita’s grotto.
The mermaids are going to the café, where Zac is waiting for someone to take his order. Sirena is stopped by David, a landboy she loves and also the owner of the café, while the newbies take place at Zac’s table to introduce themselves and discuss the problem. Sirena loses sight of the newbies. At first, Zac doesn’t understand the actions of the girls, but he soon realises that they are new mermaids as he sees their moonrings. Mimmi and Ondina try to convince Zac to get rid of his powers again, but Zac doesn’t like this and walks away after he explained to the girls that there´s nothing to worry about and that he´s happy with the way he is. They follow Zac to Evie´s shop and Mimmi enters the dressing room that Zac is using. Zac´s not happy with that either and he walks away again. As Sirena asks Mimmi what happened, Ondina follows Zac to his table where he´s eating a fish burger. A fight between the two emerges. Erik, a new waiter at the café, brings the drinks that Mimmi and Ondina had ordered earlier. As Eric leaves, the fight continues. The pressure of Zac and Ondina´s powers become so great that the drinks explode, causing Ondina and Zac to become wet. They both jump from the café’s terrace into the water, keeping their tails a secret, while all the customers look over the ridge to see where they went.
At the night of the seventh mooncycle, Mimmi makes a powerful potion that contains the power of 50 moons, hoping that this will get rid of Zac’s powers. As she´s heading to the café, she get´s a vision, but quickly shooks it off. Zac is already affected by the full moon and Sirena, Evie and Cam try to keep him away from Mako. But as Cam is talking some sence into Zac, he’s blown away by Mimmi and Ondina’s powers, giving Zac the oppertunity to go to Mako, to the great concern of Sirena and Evie. The new mermaids follow Zac, but Sirena is stopped by David. Evie follows Zac to Mako and she enters the moon pool while it’s active. The potion is also already activated when Evie enters the moon pool and she absorbs the potion while the pool is active and the moon at it’s highest point over the Mako vulcano crater. Evie becomes unconscious and and this causes Zac to snap out of the moonspell, while he’s very concerned about Evie’s condition, who´s laying unconscious in his arms while the pool is still bubbling. When the pool stops bubbling, Evie wakes up and gives Zac a hug, showing to him that she´s okay.
The next day, Sirena asks the newbies what happened during the full moon, and they explain that Evie was in the pool during the full moon. This makes Sirena very concerned and they go check on Evie to see if she has gotten powers. Zac also goes checking out on Evie how she feels and if she’s okay with the mermaid thing, and she tells Zac that she´s not a mermaid because she took a shower that morning without getting a tail, but when she shows Zac, she gets a tail, while Sirena, Mimmi, Ondina and Zac are watching her. They are all shocked to see this.
There are also more complications with Zac’s growing connection to Mako. This includes the discovery of an ancient old Merman Chamber which will also attract Erik’s interest.
The mermaids want to know what the next full moon will bring. They decide to zap Zac with moonlight out of Sirena’s ring, which gives Zac a pre-vision in which he sees the merman chamber. When it get’s to dangerous, they decide to stop. Zac is overwhelmed with what just happened and he decides to go to Mako to find the chamber, but Ondina doesn’t agree with this. At Mako, Zac follows his feelings to find the chamber. He succeeds, together with the mermaids. Sirena opens up the entrance to the merman chamber and Zac, Ondina and Mimmi enter the chamber. Zac takes place behind the chamber’s controll panel and makes the symbols on the controll panel glow when he moves over his hand. Ondina sees this as a threat and wants to stop him, but she vanishes as she steps foreward into the circle of the chamber, causing Mimmi to call out Ondina’s name in panic. They go searching for Ondina in the jungle, but in vain. They decide to enter the chamber again and Zac lights up the moon symbol on the controll panel of the chamber, believing that this will get back Ondina, but there seems to be no sign of Ondina. In the meantime, Ondina appears again in the middle of the jungle, where she’s found by Erik, who’s wondering what Ondina is doing out there. Zac and Mimmi leave the chamber, hoping that it didn’t work. Lucky for them, Ondina appears to them straight away. The controll panel in the chamber includes a moonrise symbol, a island symbol, a full moon symbol, a moon pool symbol and a trident symbol. It becomes clear that Zac is the only one capable of controlling the chamber, and he also becomes obsessed with finding out its purpose and why he´s connected to it.
Also in this season, Zac shares visions with Mimmi. He sees what Mimmi sees when she’s afraid or having a dream/vision, and the same counts for Mimmi. They are wondering why. They discovered that it’s not the island at all, but their bloodline. Mimmi is actually his long lost sister. Zac learns that he was actually born as a real merman and that he´s the son of Nerissa, the most powerful mermaid who ever existed. This discovery is too much for Zac and he begins pushing those close to him away. His whole life appears to be a lie. His mom is not his mom and his dad is not his dad. Eventually, he learns to accept who he really is after Mimmi reminds him that he has a family who cares about him, loves him and treats him as their real son and that she had nothing at all most of her childhood. He then reconnects with all the people he cares about, including Cam, and accepts Mimmi as his sister. After this, the connection between him and his newfound sister is growing very strong throughout the second half of season 2. Both of them seem to be extremely caring and protective of each other.
In this season, Zac actually didn’t really play the main character of the series in the beginning. In the beginning, it was all going about a girl named Weilan. Weilan is a mermaid too, and she lived in China. But on a full moon when she was at a Chinese feast, she got wet and jumped into the water, awakening the Water Dragon. The dragon appeared in the front of her, trying to take her tail, but Weilan managed to escape and fled to Rita, on the command of her grandmother. This dragon can take away a mermaid and merman’s tail and powers, and it´s meant to destroy pods. As Weilan fled, the dragon followed her to the Gold Coast where Rita and the Mako pod lives.
As Weilan arrives at the Gold Coast, she helps a little mermaid escape from David, who’s aware of the mermaid world. Ondina sees this and this makes her very angry with Weilan. As Ondina and Mimmi approach Rita, Weilan is introduced to the girls. When Rita leaves to work, Ondina makes her point of what she saw Weilan doing, and she’s also very mean to Weilan, trying to make her feel so unwelcome that Weilan would flee by herself. But she’s not easily fooled.
Weilan heard about Zac from Mimmi, and she’s very excited to meet Zac. After the meeting, Evie, Ondina and Mimmi have to leave because Evie got her Moon Ring from Veridia and she´s invited to celebrate her first full moon with the pod. But when they arrive at Mako, the terrifying dragon appeares, and Zac got a vision that his sister Mimmi was threatened by a dragon. Zac and Weilan rush to the mermaids, but before they arrive, the dragon got distracted by the boat of David´s brother. This is how Weilan could warn everyone, and they all escaped the dragon. At Rita´s, they warn Veridia, and Weilan tells everyone what the dragon was doing here, and what its purpose is.
Later in the season, Zac and his sister Mimmi, discover that the dragon could be their mother, so they go to Veridia to beg her to not attack the dragon. But Veridia doesn’t another way out and has no mercy. Weilan finds out that they need a bracelet to break the spell and free Nerissa, but Rikki Chadwick has the bracelet, and she’s not planning to give the bracelet to the mermaids. Zac distracts the security, so Weilan, Ondina and Mimmi can go talking with Rikki again. She again says that she’s not planning to give the bracelet to the mermaids, even though Rikki was threatned with water by the mermaids. But when Ondina and Weilan went talking to Rikki again in the moon pool, they managed to convince her to give them the bracelet. Zac wants to take the bracelet, but Rita says that Mimmi should be the one to take the bracelet, so Mimmi takes it and puts it on her arm. Together with Zac, Weilan and Ondina, Mimmi goes to face the dragon on the next full moon, and she breaks the spell. At first, Mimmi is nowhere to be seen after she broke the spell. Zac and Ondina are screaming Mimmi’s name. A moment of silence appears, and then Mimmi appears out of the water, together with Nerissa. Nerissa, Mimmi and Zac are reunited again and they all go to Rita´s grotto. There, Nerissa explains what happened to her and how she became the dragon. Nerissa promises to never ever leave Zac and Mimmi alone again.
At the end, Zac decides that he will some day tell his adoptive parents about his merman life, and that Nerissa is his biological mother.
Physical Appearance
As a human, Zac is of medium height at 5’8″ with a bulky physique. He has short brown hair, darker skin considering his actor’s Thai descent, and brown eyes. He tends to wear casual clothes, consisting of knee-high shorts and a plain t-shirt.
As a merman, Zac is slightly taller, around 6’0″ with a bulky physique. His tail is light-to-deep blue, light on the front and fading to deep blue for the sides and front. Zac is topless while he’s in merman form.
Powers
Zac possesses the ability to transform into a merman ten seconds after touching the water.
Speed Swimming
As a merman, he has the ability to swim at a super speed of 600km/h, hold his breath for more than 20 minutes, and dive at a depth lower than the deepest divers in the world. After drying off his tail, his body transforms back to human form, and his clothes are automatically dry.
Telekinesis
In «Dolphin Tale«, he starts a funny situation with Joe’s boat and starts moving it with his powers. In «Zac’s Return to Mako«, when he is under the influence of the full moon, Lyla tries to stop him from reaching the land entrance and he pushed her away using this power.
Hydrokinesis
When he is showing Cam that he turned into a merman, he creates a water ball and throws it at Cam.
Hydro-Thermokinesis
In «Zac’s Pool Party«, Zac uses this power to evaporate the pool water so Evie’s pool party will be canceled.
Invisibility
Volume Reduction
Zac used this power to improve Cam and Carly’s singing in «Sirena’s Secret«.
Turn the Tide
Turning the Tide is a Chinese defense trick. Zac learns this trick from Weilan in season 3, to stop the dragon. Unfortunate, it didn’t work.
Trident
Zac is obsessed by getting the trident in season 1. He manages to do this. Only the male gender can touch the trident, landboy or not. Mermaids can touch it, but quickly need to let go of it because it’s draining their energy. It’s unknown if landgirls can touch the trident. Zac can drain away a mermaid’s power and life energy with the trident. He can drain moonrings with it and he can zap anything or anyone with the trident, causing everything or anyone that is hit by a zap to been blown backwards. He can also knock out anyone with the trident by zapping them. The trident can also destroy the moon pool, but this is never really shown in season 1. Zac also uses the trident to control the mermaids and to keep them away from him. Mermaids fear the trident. The trident lights up when mermaids are close, warning the holder of the trident.
Merman Chamber
Zac is the only one who can control the merman chamber. He can start it up and turn it off. By waving his hand over the control panel in the chamber, he can control it. To start up the chamber, he first must touch rocks that lie around Mako, with symbols carved in it, and after that he must enter the right code on the control panel in the chamber and he must place the trident stone in the right position. Zac is the only one who can touch the symbolic rocks around Mako without being transported to the endless ocean. Zac is also the only one who can decide if a merman or mermaid is released from the endless ocean or not.
Relationships
Zac is very fond of Evie and cares very much about her and wants to be a good boyfriend. Their relationship becomes very strained because Zac is hiding his secret from her, and even more when Lyla and Zac become close friends. Evie is the only person he does not want to discover his merman side out of fear to lose her. She later finds out to about his tail when he is forced to save her from drowning in Betrayed. During season 2, they continue to date and grow closer as best friends and as a couple. They grow even more close when Evie accidentally becomes a mermaid after trying to save him from a new group of mermaids in town. She continues to support him and offered him emotional support after he found out about his adoption. She also loses her tail in season 3 because she’s hit by the dragon’s fire breath. This fire breath can take away merpeople their tail and powers.
Zac and Cam have been best mates from the time they were young children. At the first look, Cam is very supportive of his friend and helps him keeping Zac’s secret hidden from Evie. Until «Zac’s Pool Party» when Cam get tired of covering for him and Cam pushes Zac into his pool, Zac’s secret is then exposed to the three undercover mermaids. Later, they solve their problems and Cam starts helping Zac to get the trident. Later, Cam grows even more jealous of his friend’s powers and is outraged when Zac puts the trident back into the chamber. Finally, he tries to become a merman but is unsuccessful and in the end, he is on his own. After Cam helps Zac in season 2 with other oceanic issues, they finally reconnect their friendship, though they aren’t as close as they were.
Mimmi
She is Zac’s sister. During the seventh cycle, Zac began to have visions of the island of Mako, and the chamber of the trident with Mimmi who is capable of seeing them as well. Rita finally revealed that Zac is Mimmi’s brother, and therefore Nerissa’s son. Mimmi and Zac are capable of sharing visions with one another because of their bloodline. Zac could not accept Mimmi as his sister and the truth of his adoption. They share a connection spirit. But Zac does not want to be involved in all this. He eventually accepts Mimmi, after a discussion with his adoptive parents.
